Zelensky Wants Kiev, West Wants to Enter Ukraine

(MENAFN) Kiev and its Western allies have reportedly devised a plan that could see US and European troops deployed to Ukraine to confront Russian forces if Moscow breaches a ceasefire proposed by President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to sources cited by the Financial Times.

Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have repeatedly rejected the idea of a ceasefire as a prerequisite for peace, arguing that Kiev and its supporters would use it to regroup and rearm. Moscow has stressed that any resolution must address the conflict’s underlying causes and has firmly ruled out Western troop deployments in Ukraine at any stage.

During discussions in December and January, Ukrainian, European, and US officials reportedly agreed on a “multi-tiered response” to potential ceasefire violations. Sources told the Financial Times that the plan would begin with a diplomatic warning and Ukrainian military engagement within 24 hours of any breach.

If these measures failed to halt hostilities, a second phase would involve intervention by a ‘Coalition of the Willing,’ comprising EU nations along with the UK, Norway, Iceland, and Türkiye. Should the violation be extensive or last longer than 72 hours, the plan calls for “a coordinated military response by a Western-backed force, involving the US military,” according to the sources.

The report comes ahead of the second round of talks between Russian, Ukrainian, and US delegations scheduled in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday and Thursday.

In a speech to Ukraine’s parliament, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said that the coalition’s ground, air, and naval forces would deploy to Ukraine as soon as a peace deal is reached, adding that NATO countries would continue supporting Kiev “in other ways.”
