U.S. Pulls F-35 Fighter Jets from NATO Norway Exercises
The Norwegian Armed Forces confirmed to local daily Fremover that they had been formally notified of the American pullback.
"We have been informed today that the US forces will not be coming. They will be elsewhere in the world," said Lt. Col. Espen Solemdal.
Solemdal acknowledged the practical consequences for the exercise, noting that the air defense battalion lost eight exercise targets as a result — a gap he described as significant. Despite the setback, he confirmed the drill would proceed as scheduled with the remaining participating forces.
The withdrawal is directly tied to Washington's escalating military posture toward Iran. On Friday, US President Donald Trump warned that the USS Gerald R. Ford — billed as the world's largest aircraft carrier — could be deployed to the region if diplomatic negotiations with Tehran collapse.
"In case we don't make a deal, we'll need it," Trump said. "It'll be leaving very soon."
The USS Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by a fleet of destroyers, is already positioned in the Persian Gulf, having been dispatched last month as tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to escalate.
